Title: EHS Specialist

Job Summary

 

Oversees the development, implementation, compliance, reporting, and monitoring of the Company’s chemical hygiene, environmental management, and general safety programs to ensure best practices and compliance with all relevant state and federal regulations.

 

 

Responsibilities

Safety Officer

  • Work with staff to promote a positive safety culture and ensure compliance to all safety requirements
  • Advise management on health and safety issues and recommend ways to improve the safety of our operations
  • Collaborate with departmental management to ensure safety recommendations are implemented as required
  • Ensure proper safety apparel, equipment and services are provided, i.e. Safety Shoe and Glasses programs, etc.Lead safety inspections and other audit programs
  • Prepare and track safety incident investigations and reports
  • Lead the Safety Committee and provide technical assistance as needed
  • Ensure lost time and OSHA recordable safety goals are met
  • Develop and maintain EHS manuals, SOPs, and intranet resources
  • Develop and provide EHS training to personnel, including but not limited to, fork truck, confined space, blood borne pathogen, fire extinguisher, HAZCOM, PSM, Lock-out/Tag-out, confined space, CPR, respirator & respirator fit test, hot work, incident/accident, IATA, HAZWOPPER, new hire employee safety, contractor safety, chemical safety, and subsequent refresher trainings

Chemical Hygiene Officer

  • Ensure compliance to all chemical hygiene requirements
  • Manage the Hazardous Communication program include Safety Data Sheets (SDS) management system, labeling, and worker training
  • Manage the potent compound inventory list
  • Provide technical and regulatory support for chemical handling, biosafety, hazardous and biohazardous waste, industrial hygiene, and laser safety

Occupational Hygiene

  • Provide safety assessments for proposed research products, and in the absence of published OEL or TWA, sets limits based on scientifically-defensible techniques and data
  • Coordinate the retention of data associated with the occupational hygiene program including reproductive health and family planning, air monitoring, risk assessments, incidents, near misses, etc.
  • Manage a network of occupational professionals to assess new compounds to the organization and, as required, complete investigations and reports.

Environmental Compliance Officer

  • Promote environmental stewardship within the company
  • Represent the company to governmental inspectors, insurance companies, and contractors as appropriate
  • Oversee the collection, storage, packaging, and shipment of hazardous waste, and maintenance of hazardous materials files
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal safety, environmental and employee health regulations, guidelines, and all applicable policies and procedures
  • Provide technical and regulatory EHS guidance for programs including universal waste, biohazardous and hazardous waste, wastewater management, air emissions, hazard communication, biosafety, injury and illness prevention, chemical hygiene, industrial hygiene, lab safety, emergency preparedness, facilities/contractor safety, and pollution prevention
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge and Skills

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering, Safety Engineering, EH&S Management or related field.  Professional certification is a plus
  • Five (5)+ years’ experience in a manufacturing environment is required.  Chemical or Pharmaceutical industries are preferred
  • Previous experience with pharmaceutical solid dosage manufacturing and managing a staff in a cGMP regulated environment
  • Must have thorough and demonstrated knowledge and experience with federal, state and local Safety & Health regulations, including DOT, OSHA, RCRA, IATA, etc.Certified Safety Professionals (CSP) credential is preferred
  • Experience in an operations environment
  • Previous HAZWOPER certification is preferred
